Ocean Coloring Ideas: 7 Easy Palettes for Cute Sea Animals

You have picked a cute ocean coloring page, gathered your pencils, and settled into a comfortable spot. Now comes the question: which colors should you use?

Ocean coloring pages give you plenty of freedom. A crab can be bright coral, a turtle can have a lavender shell, and a jellyfish can wear almost every color in your pencil box. Your picture does not have to follow nature exactly.

If you would like a starting point, these seven ocean coloring palettes offer simple combinations for sea animals, underwater plants, and backgrounds.

1. Coral Crab and Turquoise Seaweed

Choose: coral orange, turquoise, golden yellow, and light blue.

Make a cheerful crab the center of your picture with a coral-orange shell and claws. Use turquoise for the surrounding seaweed and golden yellow for a nearby starfish.

A light-blue background can bring the scene together, but you can also leave the water white. The contrast between the colorful animals and the uncolored paper keeps the picture bright and easy to read.

Start with a light layer on the crab. If you want more depth, add a little extra coral along the lower edge of its shell and the inside of each claw.

2. Sea Turtle in Soft Greens

Choose: mint green, olive green, pale yellow, and aqua.

Try mint green for the turtle’s head and flippers, with olive green across its shell. Pale yellow works well for small shell details or sandy areas.

Use aqua for a few bubbles or a gentle outline of water around the turtle.

For a playful version, alternate mint and olive across the shell sections. You do not need to create complicated shading—the repeating colors provide enough detail on their own.

3. Pastel Jellyfish

Choose: lavender, soft pink, peach, and pale blue.

Jellyfish are a lovely opportunity to use colors that feel light and imaginative. Color the main body lavender, then alternate pink and peach along the tentacles.

Keep your pencil pressure gentle if you want a pastel effect. Add pale blue to the surrounding bubbles, leaving a little white space inside each one.

If the page includes several jellyfish, give them the same four colors in different arrangements. The scene will feel coordinated without every animal looking identical.

4. Sunny Starfish and Sandy Seabed

Choose: golden yellow, peach, sandy beige, and teal.

A yellow starfish stands out against a teal underwater setting. Add peach to its small details and use sandy beige beneath it.

You can keep the seabed simple by coloring only a narrow strip at the bottom of the page. A few darker beige dots can suggest sand without filling the whole background.

If the starfish has a smiling face, leave the facial features clear so its expression remains the focus.

5. Ocean Blues with a Warm Accent

Choose: light blue, medium blue, navy, and orange.

Use different blues for the sea animals, water, and larger background shapes. Then choose one small feature—a fish, a shell, or a starfish—to color orange.

That warm accent gives your eye somewhere to land.

Keep navy for smaller details rather than every large area. Too much dark color can make a cute, open illustration feel heavier than you intended.

6. Cozy Otter and Gentle Ocean Colors

Choose: warm brown, cream, sea green, and dusty pink.

Try warm brown for an otter’s fur, with cream around its muzzle or tummy where the illustration allows. Sea green works well for nearby water or plants.

Use dusty pink sparingly on a shell, flower-shaped detail, or another small feature.

For a simple pencil finish, color the fur lightly first. Add a second brown layer along the outside edges while keeping the center lighter.

7. Make-Believe Rainbow Reef

Choose: pink, yellow, turquoise, purple, and green.

For a more playful page, give each coral or seaweed shape its own color. Repeat those colors elsewhere in the picture so the reef feels connected.

A purple fish might have yellow fins. Pink coral could sit beside turquoise plants. A green turtle can swim through the middle.

Leave some areas white if the scene starts to feel crowded. You can always add more color later.

How to Choose a Palette Without Overthinking It

Before you start, pick one color for the main animal, one for the surrounding plants, and one for small details.

Test them together on scrap paper. If you like the combination, begin with the biggest shape and work toward the smaller areas.

You do not need to use every pencil you own. Repeating three or four colors across the page can create a satisfying result.
